What to expect from your first cosmetic surgery consultation in Perth
If you’re nervous about cosmetic surgery, whether it’s rhinoplasty, breast surgery, or something else, you’re not alone. It’s completely normal to feel a mix of curiosity and nerves, especially if you’re not sure what the process looks like.
At Forme Specialist Plastic Surgery in Perth, we’ll help you understand each step of your journey. You’ll get a chance to talk openly, ask questions, and explore whether cosmetic surgery is right for you.
Step 1: GP referral is now required
Starting with your general practitioner
AHPRA and the Medical Board of Australia introduced new guidelines in 2023 and the process is now safer, more transparent, and designed to support your wellbeing from start to finish.
For example, you’ll need a referral from your GP. Ideally, this referral comes from your usual GP, someone who knows your medical history and is not affiliated with the clinic or cosmetic surgeon you’re seeing. If that’s not possible, another independent GP or specialist can also provide the referral.
The purpose of this step is to support a thoughtful and considered decision on your part, with healthy expectations.
“It’s also an opportunity to chat through your concerns with someone impartial before you take the next step.”
Dr Jeremy Rawlins, Cosmetic Surgeon Perth
Referral timeframes:
- GP referrals: valid for 12 months
- Specialist referrals: valid for 3 months
Step 2: What happens during your cosmetic surgery consultation Perth
Under the new guidelines, every patient must attend at least two pre-operative consultations before booking a procedure.
One of these must be in person with the plastic surgeon who will be performing the surgery.
During your cosmetic surgery consultation in Perth, we’ll take time to understand:
- Your goals and motivations
- Your general health and medical history
- What outcomes you’re hoping for
- Any concerns or questions you may have
We’ll also walk you through:
- What the procedure involves
- Any alternatives available
- The potential risks and complications
- Expected recovery timelines
- Associated costs (including hospital, anaesthetist, post-op care)
All of this will also be provided in plain-language written materials for you to take home. You’ll never be rushed into making a decision.
Step 3: Screening for psychological readiness
An important part of the new guidelines is psychological screening. Everyone considering cosmetic surgery must now complete a brief assessment to check for underlying conditions, including Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD).
This is done using a validated screening tool during your consultation.
If anything in the assessment raises concerns, we’ll recommend a referral to an independent GP, psychologist, or psychiatrist.
This helps to confirm that your decision to have surgery is being made for the right reasons, with healthy expectations.
“We’re here to help you make a choice that feels right for you; mentally, physically, and emotionally.”
Dr Jeremy Rawlins, Plastic Surgeon Perth
This step is not about judgement; it’s about support. We want every patient to feel emotionally ready and confident before going ahead with surgery.
Step 4: Cooling-off period
Giving you time to think
After your second consultation and once you’ve signed your consent form, you’ll begin a minimum 7-day cooling-off period.
No deposit can be taken and no surgery can be scheduled until this time has passed.
This allows you the space to reflect, talk things through with family or friends, and ensure you’re completely comfortable with your decision.
“The cooling-off period is part of the guidelines. It gives you time to reflect, ask questions and feel certain about your decision.”

Why did the rules change?
In 2022, a significant review of the cosmetic surgery industry in Australia was triggered by concerns raised in the media, including an in-depth Four Corners investigation. These stories revealed examples of unsafe practices, aggressive advertising, and patient harm.
Following the review, AHPRA and the Medical Board introduced new guidelines to better regulate the industry.
The goals are simple:
- Improve patient safety
- Prevent vulnerable people from being misled or rushed
- Facilitate informed decision-making
These changes also include stricter rules for advertising, consent, and post-operative care.
Dealing with anxiety around surgery
Reassurance and care throughout the process
It’s normal to feel nervous. Cosmetic surgery can bring up deep emotions, about self-image, body confidence, past experiences, or fears about complications.
That’s why your consultation is not just clinical. It’s personal.
You’ll have time to talk honestly and ask anything on your mind. We’ll never pressure you into making a decision. And we’ll always be upfront about risks and limitations, so you can weigh up your options properly.
Whether you’re here for a rhinoplasty consultation process, breast augmentation, or another procedure, we want you to feel calm, informed, and heard.
