Breast Lift Perth

Breast lift

For those seeking an improvement in the droop (or ptosis) of their breasts, a mastopexy or breast lift helps to rejuvenate the breasts and gives them a firmer, more youthful look.

“A breast lift (or mastopexy) is a surgical procedure where we lift and reshape your breasts to make them look perkier and more youthful. It’s great for when your breasts have sagged a bit due to ageing, weight changes, or after having kids.”

Dr Jeremy Rawlins, Plastic Surgeon – Breast Surgery Perth

Breast lift types

There are three main types of breast lifts:

  • Periareolar breast lift: Best for mild sagging. We make a circular cut around the edge of your areola and reduce the breast skin in this central part of the breast. It does leave a scar around the areola, but it does tend to settle well.
  • Vertical breast lift: Good for moderate sagging. It needs two cuts: one around your areola and another straight down to the breast fold. Sometimes this is referred to as the lollipop lift, as the scar is in the shape of a lollipop.
  • Anchor breast lift: For more severe sagging. This is the most common type of mastopexy as it is applicable for most of the patients that come and see us with breast ptosis. This involves three cuts: around the areola, from the areola to the fold, and along the breast fold … looking like an anchor. It is sometimes called a WISE pattern, after Dr Wise who developed this technique. Despite the scars, this is often the best procedure for ptosis as it allows us to lift the breasts and create a good shape.

Breast lift surgery is done under general anaesthesia (GA) and as an overnight stay. On the day of surgery, you will meet with your surgeon for preoperative marking and a final ‘check-in’ with the nursing staff. The marking is an important part of the procedure – ensuring we get your breasts lifted and symmetrical. Your surgery will be performed as planned, absorbable sutures will be used, and waterproof dressings applied. You will also be put into your post-operative garment. Drains are not routinely used after breast lift surgery. After your surgery, you will wake up in the recovery room and you will then be transferred to your room. You’ll go home the following day.

Remember to wear comfy clothes and bring your postoperative garment with you. You’ll need a lift home and someone with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

The recovery period after a breast lift is similar to breast augmentation, with most patients fully recovering within six weeks.

In the initial days following your breast lift procedure, discomfort is common. However it can easily be managed with medium-strength or over-the-counter pain medication.

About a week after the surgery, you can usually start doing desk work and some easy exercises again. It’s important, however, to avoid strenuous tasks or exercises that could strain the chest area. If your job requires lifting heavy things, it’s best to take at least three weeks off.

By the end of the second week, many patients begin to feel significantly better and can gradually return to their normal routines, albeit with caution against engaging in intense workouts or lifting heavy objects.

Remember to wear comfy clothes and bring your post-operative garment with you. You’ll need a lift home and someone with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

At Forme Specialist Plastic Surgery we often combine breast augmentation and breast lifts. This means lifting your breasts by moving the nipple and removing excess skin, while implants increase your cup size. This combination, known as augmentation-mastopexy, gives a perkier look. This is an excellent procedure for patients who have lost breast volume and have become ptotic (particularly after many pregnancies or massive weight loss). The procedure corrects both of these issues in a single operation.

Remember to wear comfy clothes and bring your post-operative garment with you. You’ll need a lift home and someone with you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

Breast Reduction Perth

Breast reduction

Not every woman is looking for bigger breasts. In fact many patients request breast reduction. This type of breast surgery, also known as reduction mammaplasty involves removing excess breast tissue and skin.

If you have large breasts that don’t seem to fit the rest of your body, cause you discomfort and pain in your neck, shoulders, and back, and make exercise difficult, a breast reduction procedure may be indicated.

“At Forme Specialist Plastic Surgery in Perth, breast reduction is a frequent procedure, with many patients telling us they wish they’d done it sooner.”

How to best prepare for breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia with an overnight stay in the hospital. Wear comfortable clothing on the day or your surgery and bring any medications you’re currently taking. Make sure you bring your post-operative garment with you too. Make sure you’ve arranged for someone to drive you home and assist you for at least the first 24 hours post-surgery.

How long is recovery after breast reduction surgery?

The recovery timeline for breast reduction is similar to that of a breast lift, usually 6 weeks. Early recovery does involve some discomfort, manageable with pain medication. Within a week you can expect to resume light activities and desk work, but you should avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. If your job involves heavy lifting, taking at least three weeks off is advisable for a safe recovery.

In Australia, breast reduction surgery can be covered by Medicare under certain conditions, typically when it’s deemed medically necessary rather than purely cosmetic.

To qualify for Medicare coverage, the procedure usually needs to address specific health issues caused by the size of the breasts, such as back pain, neck pain, shoulder grooving from bra straps, skin irritation under the breasts, and other related physical symptoms.
