What is genital surgery?

It is normal for women to notice variations in the size, colour, and shape of the labia. If you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your genital area or experience discomfort, labiaplasty may be a consideration. Labiaplasty can address labia that are excessively long or correct asymmetry or scarring resulting from prior labial trauma or surgery.

For men, aesthetic and functional surgery to the penis may be an option if there are concerns about scarring, trauma, congenital deformities, or size. Complications or poor results following procedures such as circumcision, frenuloplasty, or other penile surgeries may lead to scarring and deformities, which can be addressed with aesthetic penile surgery. Penis enlargement surgery (augmentation phalloplasty) is an option for men who feel their penis is too short or narrow.

Labiaplasty Perth

Labiaplasty

Women may consider labiaplasty for a variety of reasons. After childbirth or significant weight loss, the labia may become enlarged, causing irritation with certain clothing or swimwear. Enlarged labia can also result in discomfort during intercourse and may lead to embarrassment during intimacy. Additionally, large labia may predispose individuals to yeast infections or urinary tract infections. Asymmetry in the size or shape of the labia is another reason women may seek labiaplasty surgery.

While it is normal for labia to vary in size, some individuals may feel self-conscious about asymmetry. Labiaplasty surgery has a high patient satisfaction rate and can enhance both the appearance and comfort of the genital area.

Dr Jeremy Rawlins, Plastic Surgeon in Perth

A study from the University of South Australia found that the majority of women who underwent labiaplasty reported high levels of satisfaction with both the appearance and comfort of their genital area post-surgery.

What is considered normal size?

There is no single “normal” size for labia, as they can vary significantly. Some women may have labia majora up to 12 cm long, and labia minora that can reach 10 cm. Research from the University of London highlights the wide range of genitalia sizes, including the average size.

This research highlights the variety of sizes among women. During our consultation, we will discuss labial length and its relevance to the different labiaplasty techniques I offer.

How is labiaplasty performed?

Labiaplasty surgery can be performed under either general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia, with the procedure typically taking about an hour.

Several techniques are employed in labiaplasty. The ‘Wedge Procedure’ aims to keep scars on the inner side of the labia as much as possible. The ‘Trim Procedure’ involves removing the front portion of the labia, resulting in a longer scar. The most commonly used technique is the ‘Trim Procedure’, where excess tissue is removed with a scalpel. Both methods have their respective advantages and disadvantages, which will be discussed during the consultation.

Recovery from labiaplasty

After labia reduction surgery, mild swelling and discomfort are common. These symptoms typically improve in the days and weeks following the procedure.

We use stitches that dissolve on their own within three to four weeks.

The scar is typically well concealed within the naturally occurring folds of the labia minora.

After labiaplasty, most individuals can return to work within a few days. However, it is advisable to wait several weeks before resuming sexual activity.

Phalloplasty Perth

Phalloplasty

Penis enlargement surgery, also known as phalloplasty, is considered by some men, even if their penis size is within the normal range. Many men may feel concerned about their penis size and believe that increasing it will improve their confidence. This type of surgery may also address certain functional issues, such as erectile dysfunction or premature ejaculation, particularly when these concerns are linked to anxieties about penis size.

What is considered normal size?

The concept of a “normal” penis size is often debated. However, according to various studies, the average length of an adult male’s penis is approximately 9.16 cm (3.5 inches) when flaccid and not stretched, and about 13.12 cm (5.5 inches) when erect.

The average circumference is around 9.31 cm when flaccid and 11.66 cm when erect. These measurements come from a study published in the British Journal of Urology International, a source widely regarded as reliable within the medical community.

How is phalloplasty performed?

To increase penis length, we focus on the portion of the penis hidden inside the body, which makes up approximately one-third of its total length.

This hidden portion is connected to the pubic bone by a ligament called the suspensory ligament. By releasing this ligament, we allow the hidden portion of the penis to extend forward from the pubic area, resulting in a visible increase in length, typically by one to three centimetres.

For increasing penis girth, both surgical and non-surgical options are available:

  • Surgical option: The penis can be widened using dermal fat grafts taken from the abdomen or thigh/buttocks. These grafts are inserted beneath the skin of the penis shaft. More commonly, fat grafts from the tummy and flanks are injected around the circumference of the penis (under the skin).
  • Non-surgical option: Non-surgical methods, such as fillers, are another option. Similar to lip fillers, penis fillers are injected into the soft tissue under the skin of the shaft. Depending on the amount injected, the circumference can be increased by one to two centimetres, and the effect typically lasts for about a year and a half.

Recovery from phalloplasty

Depending on the type of phalloplasty and your overall health, an overnight stay in the hospital may be required.

Swelling and bruising around the surgery site are common after phalloplasty. The swelling typically worsens in the first few days and gradually subsides over the following weeks and months.

We will provide you with clear instructions on how to care for your wounds, which activities to avoid, and when to schedule follow-up appointments after surgery. Following these instructions carefully is essential for promoting healing and reducing the risk of complications.

After surgery, you won’t be allowed to lift heavy things or do any strenuous activities. This helps your body heal the right way.

Stitches are typically used to close the incisions. Some stitches dissolve on their own, while others may need to be removed during a follow-up appointment.

A scar may form after surgery. However, we will make every effort to keep it as small and discreet as possible.
