What is genital surgery?

As a woman, it’s normal to notice differences in the size, colour, and shape of your labia. If you’re not happy with how your genital area looks or if it’s uncomfortable, you may wish to consider labiaplasty. Labiaplasty may be considered for labia that are too long or for patients who have experienced prior labial trauma / surgery and are left with scars / asymmetry.

As a man, if you’re unhappy with your penis due to scars, trauma, congenital deformities, or size, then aesthetic and functional surgery to the penis may be helpful. Complications and poor results following circumcision, frenuloplasty, or other surgeries to the penis may result in embarrassing scars and deformity that can be addressed with aesthetic penile surgery. Penis enlargement surgery (augmentation phalloplasty) is an option for men who feel their penis is too short or too narrow.

Labiaplasty Perth

Labiaplasty

Women might consider labiaplasty for a number of reasons. If you’ve had children or lost a lot of weight, your labia might be too large and cause irritation with certain clothing and swimwear. Large labia can also cause discomfort during intercourse and can be an embarrassment during intimacy. Large labia can also predispose to yeast infections or urinary tract infections. Sometimes an asymmetry in the shape and size of the labia is a reason for labiaplasty surgery.

“Even though it’s completely normal to have labia that aren’t exactly the same size, you might not feel okay with it. Labiaplasty surgery has a high patient satisfaction rate and helps make the genital area look better and feel more comfortable.”

Dr Jeremy Rawlins, Plastic Surgeon in Perth

A study from the University of South Australia showed that most women who had labiaplasty felt really satisfied with how their genital area looked and felt afterwards.

What is considered normal size?

There’s no “normal” size for labia; they can vary a lot. Some women have labia majora that are up to 12 cm long, and labia minora that can reach 10cm. Research from the University of London shows the wide range of genitalia sizes, along with the average.

“This research highlights the variety of sizes among women. In our consultation, we’ll discuss labial length and its relevance to the different labiaplasty techniques I perform.”

How is labiaplasty performed?

Labiaplasty surgery can be performed using either general anaesthesia or local anaesthesia. The surgery usually takes about an hour.

Various techniques are used in labiaplasty practice. The ‘Wedge Procedure’ keeps scars on the inside as much as possible/ The ‘Trim Procedure’ trims the front of the labia away – with a longer scar. The most common labiaplasty technique is the ‘Trim Procedure’, where we trim away the excess tissue with a scalpel. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages which will be discussed at the time of consultation.

Recovery from labiaplasty

After labia reduction surgery, it’s common to have some swelling and a little pain. These symptoms should get better in the days and weeks after your surgery.

We use stitches that dissolve on their own within three to four weeks.

The scar is well hidden within the naturally wrinkled tissue of the labia minora.

After your labiaplasty, you can usually return to work in a few days. However, we advise waiting a few weeks before having sexual intercourse again.

Phalloplasty Perth

Phalloplasty

Penis enlargement surgery, also called phalloplasty, is something some men think about even when their penis size may be completely normal. A lot of men worry about how big their penis is and believe making it bigger will make them feel more confident. This type of plastic surgery can sometimes also help with erection issues or ejaculating too soon, especially if these problems are because of anxieties around penis size.

What is considered normal size?

A “normal” penis size is often a subject of much discussion, but according to various studies, the average length of an adult male’s penis is approximately 9.16 cm (3.5 inches) when flaccid and not stretched, and about 13.12 cm (5.5 inches) when erect.

The average circumference is around 9.31 cm when flaccid and 11.66 cm when erect. These measurements come from a study published in the British Journal of Urology International, which is widely regarded as a reliable source in the medical community.

How is phalloplasty performed?

To increase penis length, we target the part of the penis hidden inside the body, which makes up about one-third of its total length.

This hidden part is connected to the pubic bone by a ligament called the suspensory ligament. By dividing this ligament, we allow the hidden part of the penis to extend forward from the pubic area, resulting in a visible increase in length, typically by about one to three centimetres.

As for increasing penis girth, there are both surgical and non-surgical options:

  • Surgical option: We can widen the penis by using dermal fat grafts taken from the abdomen or thigh/buttocks. These grafts are then inserted beneath the skin of the penis shaft. More often we use injected ‘fat grafts’ taken from fat in the tummy and flanks and injected around the circumference of the penis (under the skin).
  • Non-surgical option: Another option is non-surgical methods such as fillers. Similar to lip fillers, penis fillers are injected into the soft tissue under the skin of the shaft. Depending on the amount injected, we can increase the circumference by one or two centimetres, and the effect usually lasts for about a year and a half.

Recovery from phalloplasty

Depending on the type of phalloplasty and your overall health, you may need to stay in the hospital for a night.

It’s normal to have swelling and bruising around the surgery area after phalloplasty. The swelling usually gets worse in the first few days and then starts to go down over the next few weeks and months.

“We’ll give you clear instructions on how to take care of your wounds, what activities to avoid, and when to come back for check-ups after surgery. It’s important to follow these instructions carefully to help your body heal and lower the chances of any problems.”

Dr Jeremy Rawlins, Plastic Surgeon in Perth

After surgery, you won’t be allowed to lift heavy things or do any strenuous activities. This helps your body heal the right way.

Yes, stitches are typically used to close the incisions. Some stitches dissolve on their own, while others may require removal during a follow-up appointment.

Yes, you may have a scar after surgery. However, we will try to make it as small and hidden as possible.
