Rhinoplasty

The nose plays an important role in overall facial aesthetics. Rhinoplasty can be considered for individuals who wish to address concerns regarding the size, shape, or angle of the nose, or for those seeking functional improvements. Additionally, rhinoplasty and septoplasty may be used to correct nasal deformities following trauma or medical conditions, such as cancer, to improve both appearance and function.

What is rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure aimed at improving both the appearance and function of the nose. It involves making adjustments to the shape, size, and profile of the nose based on individual needs and clinical assessment:

  • Dorsal hump reduction: Removing a nasal hump to achieve a smoother nasal profile, where appropriate.
  • Bridge straightening: Straightening the nasal bridge to improve overall symmetry and alignment.
  • Nose tip reshaping: Correcting concerns such as overprojection, underprojection, or bulbousness of the nasal tip.
  • Nostril modification: Adjusting the size of the nostrils to achieve a more balanced appearance.
  • Augmentation or reduction: Modifying the overall size of the nose to achieve a more proportional look, based on patient-specific goals.
  • Post-trauma reconstruction: Correcting structural deformities caused by injury.
  • Nasal

In some cases, non-surgical options like dermal fillers may be used to temporarily modify the appearance of the nose. These treatments provide a temporary change that can last several months and may help patients visualise potential results before considering surgical options. The most suitable treatment plan will be discussed during your consultation based on your goals and clinical assessment.

What are the different types of rhinoplasty?

Depending on the complexity of the procedure and the desired outcomes, a decision will be made regarding the most appropriate surgical approach—either open or closed rhinoplasty:

  • Open rhinoplasty: This technique is commonly used for more extensive procedures, involving a small incision in the columella (the tissue between the nostrils). This allows direct access to the nasal structure, where adjustments can be made to the bone, cartilage, and other tissues. The incision is typically well-hidden in the natural folds of the nose.
  • Closed rhinoplasty: This approach is often used for more subtle changes, with incisions made inside the nostrils. While there are fewer techniques available through this method, it can be effective for certain types of reshaping that do not require extensive structural changes.</li
Revision rhinoplasty, also known as secondary rhinoplasty, is performed for individuals who have previously undergone nasal surgery but require further adjustments. The surgical approach, whether open or closed, will be determined based on the specific anatomical and functional needs of the patient, as discussed during consultation.

Before your surgery, we will take photographs of your nose to document its current appearance and help plan the procedure. It is important to inform your surgeon about any medications you are currently taking, as some may need to be temporarily stopped prior to surgery (e.g., blood thinners). Smoking, vaping, and the use of recreational drugs, including cocaine, should be avoided both before and after surgery, as they can impair circulation to the treated area and affect wound healing, potentially leading to complications such as skin necrosis.

How long is recovery after rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty and septo-rhinoplasty are typically performed under general anaesthesia, and most patients require an overnight stay in the hospital. Post-surgical nasal packing is commonly used and is usually removed the day after the procedure. A splint is typically applied to the nose following surgery and is usually removed one week later, along with any sutures.

Swelling is expected after rhinoplasty and may persist for several weeks. The swelling will gradually subside over the following weeks and months, with individual recovery times varying based on the procedure and patient healing characteristics.

Our team is dedicated to supporting you throughout your recovery process, ensuring you are well-informed and guided at every stage.

Swelling and nasal congestion are common after rhinoplasty. Light activities and work may be resumed within a few days, though full recovery and resolution of swelling can take several weeks. Some degree of swelling may persist for up to six months, with gradual improvement over time.
